On Roanoke Island, the legend of the 114 people who mysteriously vanished from the Lost Colony hundreds of years ago is just an outdoor drama for the tourists, a story people tell. But when the island faces the sudden disappearance of 114 people now, an unlikely pair of 17-year-olds may be the only hope of bringing them back.

Miranda, a misfit girl from the island's most infamous family, and Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead, must dodge everyone from federal agents to long-dead alchemists as they work to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony. The one thing they can't dodge is each other.

Despite the fact that I'm terrified of snakes, I had to read this book. The description was too good to pass up. Miranda and her entire family are cursed. She thinks having a drunk for a father is bad, until he turns up missing along with 114 others in the town. Miranda just wants to find her father, but when he winds up dead and then shows up walking around town, Miranda realizes things are so much worse than she ever imagined.

Enter Phillips. He and Miranda are drawn to each other, even though fate has them targeted as enemies. Together, they must unravel what's going on in the town. And nothing is as it seems. I liked the dynamic between Miranda and Phillips. I was hoping there would be more swoon-worthy moments between them since this is described as a contemporary romance, but the story really didn't allow these two much down time so their relationship is more hinted at than seen.

This is a pretty quick read. I was shocked when I looked up the page count and saw it was over 400 because it felt more like 250-300 pages. The story keeps moving forward at a pace that doesn't really let you stop reading. And the ending was great. I couldn't put the book down because things were unraveling so quickly and I needed to see what was going to happen.
