Daemons in the Mist Blog Tour

Summary: Finally getting the girl of your dreams; what could possibly go wrong?

Seventeen year old Patrick Connolly has been hopelessly infatuated with Nualla for years but he is all but invisible to her. Until, that is, he rescues her from a confrontation with her ex. Little does Patrick know he’s just set off a dangerous chain reaction that will thrust him into a world of life altering secrets and things that shouldn’t exist, because the fog and mist of San Francisco is concealing more than just buildings.

Today you guys are definitely in for a treat. Alicia Kat Dillman, the wonderful author of Daemons in the Mist, will be here to share the weirdest things about writing her novel. Without further ado:

Invisibility, Refraction and Retro-Viruses, Oh My!
The weird science behind Daemons in the Mist

There is a lot of crazy weird science in The Marked Ones trilogy. Cognitive dissonance, invisibility, refraction, retro-viruses, limited spectrum printing and ePaper are just a few of the super cool things that make a cameo. But the strangest thing in Daemons in the Mist is probably the daemons themselves and the extra sensory abilities they employ.

Though I’m not a scientist by any stretch of the imagination, I do go to lengths to make sure the science and physics I use in my books are at least reasonably possible.

Today I’m just going to talk about one, the daemons illusionary fields.

The daemons use emerging technology, natural physics and perceptual psychology to hide their world and their true form from us. So is it made up science? Hardly. Though it may sound extremely far-fetched outside of Harry Potter or James Bond but invisibility cloaking devices, fields and clothing are currently being developed by both the United States and Britain.

We all take for granted that what we see is what is there but in reality we are only seeing the light reflected back at us by the objects we are looking at. So what if a creature, a daemon for example, had the ability to control the way the visible spectrum interacts with them and reflect back an altered visual description of themselves? How would you know? The scary truth, you really wouldn’t.

The Cuttlefish already possess a similar ability to change color, light polarisation and even the texture of their skin in a matter of seconds to blend in with their environment. Basically their skin can produce a 359DPI photographic image to trick the eye. So if these creatures can do something so phenomenal, would it really be so far fetched that a creature, like the daemons, could possess their inherent skill set, and the ability to use them at will?
