Spotlight on Starters by Lissa Price

Hardcover, 368 pages
Published March 13th 2012 by Delacorte Books for Young Readers

HER WORLD IS CHANGED FOREVER

Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie's only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man.

He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie's head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator's grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations' plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. . . .

I wasn’t expecting Starters to be this creepy! I loved the creep factor. Enders—senior citizens using teens to relive their youth—through a facility known as Prime Destinations. Creepy. It’s almost like a resort for them. Rich seniors get to be young again for a while and the starters—the teens—are paid to rent out their bodies. There are no middle-aged people, as they weren’t given a vaccine before the Spore Wars. Many kids and teens are left on their own, trying to survive, and when Callie can no longer watch her little brother suffer, she decides to become a donor at Prime Destinations.

Callie was a very likable character. I understood and related to her motivations. She’s clever and resourceful, and I liked how she put things together. I also enjoyed the political intrigue in this story. I usually shy away from books heavy with politics, but Price wove it throughout the plot nicely, creating an intense mystery, and a non-stop thrill ride. The romance has a bit of a love triangle, but for me, there was no question whose team I was rooting for ;) I love me some Blake. The dystopian world was interesting and mysterious.  I’m hoping the sequel will expound more on the world and go deeper into this fascinating dystopian setting. Overall, a highly engaging read with intrigue and romance, a strong heroine , and the promise of a thrilling series.
