Kate Winters has won immortality.

But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.

Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry’s first wife, Persephone

I freaking LOVED THE GODDEST TEST, so when given the chance to review the ARC for GODDESS INTERRUPTED, I pretty much tackled my fellow YA BOUND bloggers for the chance to do it. Well, virtually tackled, obviously. But even with all that excitement, I have to admit, I was a little nervous. See, the first book was so fun and fresh and different that I worried book 2 couldn’t keep the same energy. And though I never give spoilers, the synopsis above even says the book begins with Henry more distant than Kate expects. Then, he’s abducted. When that happened at, oh, around 18% into the novel? That was around the time my anxiety kicked up a notch.
Silly me.
Once I wrapped my head around the fact that the sequel wasn’t the book I expected it to be, and really dove into the story world Aimee Carter created of the vast Underworld with rich backstories and deeper character exploration, I was completely hooked. We were actually driving home from New Orleans and I kept shushing my husband for interrupting me! Luckily, he understands my book obsession and forgave me. (Good husband.)
Carter developed Kate’s relationship with James more and I really grew to like him. I’m intrigued to see where she takes him in the series. Ava continued to make me smile on every page she was on, and I enjoyed meeting Persephone. To quickly address concerns I’ve seen elsewhere in the blogosphere, let me just say that Persephone is a complex character. She is not painted with one stroke, making her the bad guy Kate perceived her as in first book. We learn more about her past with Henry, and all of Kate’s insecurities over being her younger sister/replacement are addressed. I actually liked Persephone a lot.
Kate became stronger in this installment, too, and completely found her voice by the end. There’s a major scene where she stands before the entire council and speaks her mind, and I literally did a fist pump into the air. (Hey, I never claimed not to be a dork.) Throughout the story, I felt emotionally connected to her and even when I didn’t agree with her conclusions or opinions at the time, I fully understood where Kate was coming from and believed she would get where she needed to be by the end. And I was right.
And the steam. Since the blurb stated Henry was distant, and then he’s abducted, I was sure this book wouldn’t give me the swoony Henry I fell for in THE GODDESS TEST. Again, I was wrong. I just had to be patient—not my strong suit, by the way. And by the end of the book, I was more in love with Henry than ever.
What can I say about the ending??? Without giving spoilers—eek!!—let’s just say it’s epic. I was eager for book 2 in the series, but right now I’m leg jiggling, eye twitching, shoulders shaking, chomping at the bit, to find out what happens next!!!! Thank goodness we only have to wait until October for THE GODDESS INHERITANCE!
And don't forget--THE GODDESS HUNT, a free novella set in the world of THE GODDESS TEST, taking place between the first and second books, will be released for download March 1st!
