Review: Between by Cyndi Tefft

246 pages
Published April 21st 2011 by Createspace

From Goodreads: It just figures that the love of Lindsey Water's life isn't alive at all, but the grim reaper, complete with a dimpled smile and Scottish accent.

After transporting souls to heaven for the last 300 years, Aiden MacRae has all but given up on finding the one whose love will redeem him and allow him entry through the pearly gates.

Torn between her growing attraction to Aiden and heaven's siren song, Lindsey must learn the hard way whether love really can transcend all boundaries.

Review: This was a beautiful love story. I have to admit, it’s not meant for the younger YA crowd. This is definitely Crossover or even closer to Adult Fiction. And I’m not saying this because of the physical relationship between the characters, which did get a bit intimate. Plenty of today's YA pushes the boundaries. I’m talking about the voice and the feel of the novel. But I enjoyed the relationship development between Lindsey and Aiden. And I felt the paranormal element and romance will appeal to the YA Paranormal Romance loving crowd.

The writing in general was strong. I read the story in one sitting in a couple of hours, and it flowed nicely. Lindsey was a very likable character. Right from the start she was given a difficult situation, but she handled it with grace. As she and Aiden became closer, their time spent together and visiting each other’s memories became the focus of the story. Although these were interesting scenes, the story did begin to drag a bit during this time, but the tension quickly picked up as the couple was torn apart. Their love for one another, and drive to be together, was the force in this story. It was one of the better stories I’ve read where a couple struggles against all odds to be together.

One aspect I like, but wasn’t sure if it’s listed on the author’s site or other reviews, was the focus on God. I don’t think this is listed as a Christian YA, but you can’t help but notice the undertone as you read. Lindsey’s, and even Aiden’s, faith and belief in God was ever-present, and their prayers were heard throughout their story. Very interesting premise and read. I recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a passionate love story with a paranormal twist, and even to readers of faith who want a strong voice of reason. A great read.

Happy Book Birthday! Sweet Light by Jen Wylie

Published June 2011 by Echelon Press
Pages: 290
Description: When fate conspires against you and gives you three loves to choose from, what do you do? What if you make the wrong choice?

Shara is a healer, raised and trained from childhood until her unique gift manifests itself. When she gains the rank Journeyman she is hired to serve as the court healer for the barbaric kingdom of Glendor.

Untrained for war, she is thrust unmercifully into its bloody arms when the kingdom is invaded. Ordered by her king to the front lines to tend the wounded, she is forced to flee when their camp is attacked. Happening upon a wounded soldier in the forest, every mile back to the capital is a struggle, and breaking the healer's code, she falls in love with her charge.

If Shara thought that to be the least of her troubles, the appearance of a fierce warrior captain who appoints himself her protector, teaches her differently. Trouble comes in threes at the appearance of a former love and fellow healer. Faced with decisions of the heart and the sudden manifestation of her gift, there is little room for anything else to go wrong. Or at least that's what Shara thought.

Excerpt:

Prologue
Blood arced through the air as his sword slashed across his enemy's neck. He turned his head away, avoiding the spray while seeking his next opponent. They attacked from everywhere, these northern barbarians who invaded his land so suddenly.
He grimaced and parried the awkward blow of an ax as he spun to kill another enemy. He ducked the axman's second attack and twisted to slice through the man's scant armor. For a moment, the space around him remained clear and he searched for his men. They had lost formation, but he wasn't worried. The Southerners called them barbarians. They weren't, not like these newcomers from further north, who covered themselves with nothing but leather and hides and often painted their faces as well.
At least his men wore real armor and battled with good weapons. They fought in formation like the Southerners, but could also fight on their own. They even learned to fight in pairs in the style of armies past, before Glendor became a country and nomadic clans roamed their land.
He cursed as the invaders pushed his men back. If a god of war truly existed, he had surely abandoned them this day.
He laughed at his own thought. The gods disappeared long ago. They remained only in stories and distant memories, all except Lady Death. She likely walked the field even as she crossed his mind. He feared he would see her terrible beauty this day.
"Fall back!" He raised his arm and gained the attention of the men nearest him.
His soldiers reacted to the command and made their way toward camp. The enemy continued to fight with every step. Would they get no respite?
He gathered his men as they neared camp. Chaos reigned within as cooks, field medics, wounded soldiers, and the rest scrambled to evacuate.
She caught his attention and filled his vision, the slip of girl who called herself a healer. She came from the south, from Hancar. Her large brown eyes and hair, a mass of brown curls, gave her a child-like appearance. The king acquired her mere months ago to tend those at the keep. At the first sign of attack, the king ordered her north to tend the wounded.
He initially scoffed at the king's decision. The worst the girl had seen had been kitchen injuries and runny noses. However, in the days since she had arrived at the border, he had changed his opinion. She deftly splinted bones and stitched wounds, even though he could see she wanted to be anywhere but here.
She stood frozen with fear near one of the tents, eyes wide at the carnage around her. Gods, she looked innocent, small, and helpless. He cursed the king for bringing her to the border and for not taking her back to the city with him.
The king, thinking the worst passed, had left the battlefield a day earlier and took a good part of the army with him. He ordered his men to remain behind and deal with the Northern stragglers.
Unfortunately, more of the enemy remained than first thought. Glendor scouts found nothing to indicate their presence. He had no reason to doubt the skill of his scouts, and yet…Where had they all come from?
He resumed the fight, arms aching. He left behind a trail of blood that covered everything. The invaders fought relentlessly as they pushed forward, heedless of their own dwindling numbers. His men regrouped and held their ground at the edge of camp. It did not take long before the Northerners forced them back into the camp itself.
They sidestepped around scattered gear, fire pits, and tents as they fought. He pushed himself harder in an attempt to buy time for his people to escape. He tried to ignore the screams around him and had little desire to consider how many of the horrid pleas belonged to civilians slaughtered throughout the camp.
He feared for the safety of their healer. Gods only knew what would happen should she be lost. Not only would it decimate the men's morale, but her death might cause repercussions with their southern neighbors as well. Hancar valued their healers above all else. If he allowed the one in Glendor to be killed...he did not even want to consider the consequences. They did not want Hancar as an enemy. Theirs was a large and greatly populated country with a daunting army. Its size easily dissuaded invasion by its neighbors.
He pushed his thoughts aside as he struck out, killing another man as he sought out the healer again. He finally spotted her astride a horse, struggling to keep the frightened animal under control. He grimaced. She should have long since retreated with the others.
After a few tense moments, she gained control of her mount and moved forward. He released the lungful of air he had not realized he held.
He turned his attention back to the battle in time to see a Northerner raise his bow and take aim at the healer. Shit!
Anger raged through him as he ran forward, his sword making short work of all in his path. While he raced toward him, the Northerner released not one, but three arrows in quick succession. He rammed his shoulder against the Northerner, foiling a fourth volley and sending them both to the ground. He reeled back and plunged his sword into the man's chest. The fallen bowman's scream joined those of so many others who lie scattered and dying around them.
He stood, his sword once again red with the blood of his enemy. He searched for the girl, and caught a glimpse of her as her horse veered wildly off into the woods to the south. Her mount had been hit, but she looked unscathed. Thank the gods.
However, the direction she rode caused him to growl in frustration. Bloody hells. She would get herself lost or worse–killed.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught movement to his left. Before he could react, pain flared across his stomach as the Northerner's blade sliced through his leather armor.
He sprang forward in rage and pain, his blade striking a fatal blow. He cursed as the man slid off his sword and fell to the ground. He looked to the south again and saw no sign of the girl. With a growl, he swiveled and surveyed the camp.
"Regroup!" Forearm pressed to the wound on his stomach, he strode back into the fray.
He had to stop thinking about her and concentrate on the fighting ahead. Thoughts of a woman while in battle would lead to defeat, if not death. One of the many reasons he avoided them. A feminine distraction was neither wanted nor acceptable, and gods forbid he ever fall in love. Hah! The idea held no desire for him. He had always been, and would remain, a dedicated soldier, a warrior…a killer. His life held no room for the nonsense of love.
Despite such thoughts, he glanced back over his shoulder once more.

Review: Earth: Elemental Series by Shauna Granger

ebook
Published May 1st 2011 by Shauna Granger

From Goodreads: Shayna and her two best friends have the abilities to manipulate and control the four elements, earth, air, water and fire. While learning to hone their growing powers, they discover a new and malicious presence in their sleepy beach town. Someone is performing blood magic and threatens to expose their small magical community. So far only small animals have been slaughtered, but then the nightmares start.

Shayna suffers nightmares of being chased and sacrificed only to wake up bloodied and bruised. She thinks her magical blood is the ultimate target for the final blood rite. When an innocent girl, Tracy, is kidnapped Shayna knows it's only a ploy to draw her out; she can't let someone die because of her.

Review: This was not a good for a self pubbed book… This was a great book period. Right from the first page I lost myself in the story, and more than that, the characters. I cannot stress enough, even the writers I beta for, how important it is to write your teen characters’ dialogue authentically. I spend my days listening to my son and his friends talk, and this story was like being in the same room as real life teens. The writing was clean and clear, and flowed perfectly. I didn’t pause once and think a sentence could have been written better. And that’s a difficult thing for me not to do lol.

I loved Shayna. She was just a straight up awesome girl. I liked that she and her friends came into the story knowing of their abilities and powers. It gave the story a deeper plot as they had to figure other things out, just not about themselves. I enjoyed the youthful voice of the novel. I laughed out loud so many times as the characters bantered. It was refreshing.

My only issue was there wasn’t enough of Jensen, the lead guy. He was a cool, amazing character, and I just simply wanted him to have more ‘screen’ time. Although, scenes like the one of him and Shayna in the restaurant added so much depth to their relationship. The time they did spend together I felt was enhanced by him not being in every scene. And I loved the way they talked to each other. Although Shayna was very attracted to Jensen, she didn’t let that rule her actions. She thought for herself and questions things about him. I liked this very much.

Overall, this was a well-crafted YA with a fresh, unique voice and wonderful characters. I could have used a smidge more romance, but the tension and the implied ‘this isn’t over’ there at the end, is enough to make me want to suck down the next book in hopes that I get a little steamy ;) The plot was strong, and it was a great mystery. I recommend this to anyone who likes Wiccan, witchcraft, or Paranormal novels, and is looking for something with great voice and refreshingly authentic characters in YA. Awesome read!

Closing to review requests: Looking for guest posts

For the next month or so, I’m going to be closed to taking on new review books. This was a really hard decision to come to. I feel like I’m going to be missing out on some amazing reads. But it’s necessary at this point so I can keep my sanity. I’m still reading and reviewing the books I’ve taken on so far, so thank you for your understanding, patient authors, as I get them up.

My husband and I have opened a home business, and between getting that going and critiquing beta books, not to mention reading and reviewing the books I’ve already committed to, I just can’t take on anything more at this time. Because I’ve been a major slacker on my blog lately, I’m welcoming others to do guest posts. If there are any authors that want to host giveaways or market their books, please contact me. I’d love to have more promotion for your work on the blog =)

Besides the mentioned above, and while raising a teenage boy, I’ve also been quite busy on my own project. I may have some exciting news to report on my YA Steampunk THE CRYSTAL PENDULUM pretty soon… And this will be the first place I shout it out. Um, well after I tweet probably ;p

Just wanted to give a big thank to all my followers! And again apologize for being absent this past couple months. But I’m open to ideas on guest posts of all kinds, so hit me up! Thanks so much for your understanding, and I promise I’m getting reviews up soon!

Review: Mercy by Rebecca Lim

Hardcover, 288 pages
Published May 17th 2011 by Hyperion BooksBuy at Amazon here

From Goodreads: A fallen angel haunted by her past. Yearning for her immortal beloved. Forever searching for answers.Who will show her Mercy?

Mercy has lost herself. She can’t count how many times she’s “woken up” in a new body, and assumed a new life, only to move on again and again. During the day she survives in the human world on instinct and at night her dreams are haunted by him. Mercy’s heart would know him anywhere. But her memory refuses to cooperate.

But this time is different. When Mercy wakes up she meets Ryan, an eighteen year old reeling from the loss of his twin sister who was kidnapped two years ago. Everyone else has given up hope, but Ryan believes his sister is still alive. Using a power she doesn’t fully comprehend, Mercy realizes that Ryan is right. His sister is alive and together they can find her. For the first time since she can remember, Mercy has a purpose; she can help. So she doesn’t understand why the man in her dreams cautions her not to interfere. But as Ryan and Mercy come closer to solving the dark mystery of his sister’s disappearance, danger looms just one step behind.

Will Mercy be able to harness her true self and extraordinary power in time?

The first in a dazzling new series, Mercy masterfully weaves romance, mystery and the supernatural into a spell-binding tale.

Review: Oh, my gosh. When I first read the synopsis for this, I thought it sounded pretty good. Getting into the first few pages, I was wondering what the heck this story was about. It seemed very strange at first, and the voice did that thing that usually annoys me where it talks right to the audience. But I kept going, and I’m so glad I did. The voice is one of the elements I love most about this story.

Mercy is an unbelievably authentic character who reminds me of me sometimes LOL She’s sarcastic, but not in an annoying or prissy way, but in a relatable way. Many times I found myself nodding along agreeing with everything she said or thought. She’s strong and although she’s over dealing with things she doesn’t understand, she can’t help but get involved because she wants the underdog to come out on top. This made me love her immediately. I normally don’t get too attached to characters or stories written by British authors, it’s rare when I do, they seem to just have this weird vibe that I don’t connect with. But I loved this story. Even though words or phrases were different than my own, the author wrote them and used them the way any teen or young woman would, no matter what country she’s from.

Ryan is an awesome guy lead. The fact that he’s searching for his sister and refuses to believe she’s dead and his passion to find her—he’s intense. His character is so well crafted. He’s got some competition from Luc, though, and to be honest, I don’t really know which team I’m on from at this point, I love them both. The plot was very well fleshed out. Elizabeth Chandler is one of my favorite authors, I always get lost in the mystery of her books, and Mercy’s ‘who did it’ theme reminds me a great deal of one of her stories, but with its own unique twists and voice. And I love the twists! This is a wonderful story and I completely lost myself in it. I can’t praise it enough. Lovers of mystery, romance, and the paranormal will devour it. Check it out!

From Goodreads: Professor Pelusian Minus has moved the carnival to Chicago. Using the twins, he plans to replace all of the carnival workers with a clockwork force designed and built by the young brother and sister. The twins know it is wrong and they stall as long as possible in hopes of escaping from the professor and the carnival that has been their home for most of their lives.

Things seem to be getting better as the twins make a new friend. If only everything was as it seemed. Paige's life is still in danger and they have not found the one thing that could save her. Is there plan to get even with Professor minus too outrageous? Things take a turn for the worse as a horrible accident befalls them and an old friend comes to their rescue!

Follow along as outsiders start to wonder about The Flying Twins. Will the US Marshal Vance Tucker find them before it's too late? Will the twins find a way to free Paige from her deadly device? Will Minus' evil plans come really happen? You'll have to read to find out.

Review: Second Chance is the Second installment of a series of short stories through Quakeme.com, a division of Echelon Press, intended to shake up young readers. Hayden is co-writing this story with his son, who is in Fifth grade. What a great team!

This next part of the series takes the twins to Chicago, where they are being forced to perform a dangerous flying routine with their glider wings. And since their last near escape, the professor has placed a collar around Paige’s neck, one that will explode if they try to leave again. In the new city, Dade meets Victoria, a beautiful girl who captures his interest. But she might not be all she seems. Her identity is revealed, and Dade realizes that she’s been merely talking to him for a reason. Or has she? I tend to think we’ll see more of her in the series, and I’m hoping for a happy ending for Dade =)

The steamsmith twins are pushed to the limit when the professor demands more robots than they can build. And now that Victoria’s actions has gotten the twins into even more trouble, they are packing up and leaving once again to a new city. New York. But, Victoria has helped. New information has been given to the detective and he’s got a new lead in locating the twins. It’s getting really exciting! I love all the characters and how their stories are coming together. The steampunk element is amazing. So much fun stuff that anyone, boy or girl, teen or adult, will get lost in the fantasy of the world. Looking forward to the next installment.

Review: Intrinsical by Lani Woodland

Hardcover & ebook, 298 pages
Published August 20th 2010 by Pendrell Publishing

From Goodreads: Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly.

Review: I’ve been meaning to read this story for a while. Every time I look at that gorgeous cover, I wonder what the heck took me so long? Many review requests, my own writing… Either way, I will remember in the future when a book is calling to me to be read, to drop everything and just read it! I was almost angry with family and friends for pulling me away while reading. I didn’t want to stop.

Sixteen-year-old Yara is an amazing character. Right from the beginning—which is breath-holding-ly exciting—she was fierce and determined. She relates with teens of today on so many levels. I remember being that age and embarrassed over every little thing in my family—not wanting to be associated with them, but wanting to be ‘normal’ or average, just like everyone else. Of course, looking back, we can all see how silly it was, but that’s not how you feel at the time. And Yara’s character is so perfectly developed around this issue. Her character growth over the story is wonderful. I love it when you can actually SEE the character change through her experiences, not just told she did so at the end. And her actions show this in a vibrant way that made me root for her through the whole story. She’s smart and I enjoyed being inside her head as she rationalized her situations. It’s refreshing. I also share a little issue she has with her angry management lol. We would get along well ;)

Brent… Oh, boy of my dreams, is cocky. Yes. Cocky in every way that I love my lead guys to be. He’s gorgeous, and he knows it. But what I love about him is he is so fleshed out, he’s not just full of one-liners trying to make me believe he’s cocky and then show me what a decent guy he is. His personality sparkles on every page through his actions and even his inactions. There were so many sides of his character I came to love, I truly see him as a real person—with interests, flaws, habits, strengths, and courage. There are no words to describe what a phenomenal job Ms. Woodland did creating him and delivering a truly swoon-worthy lead guy. I. Love. Brent.

The relationship between Yara and Brent. Let me tell you, this story has an amazingly fleshed out plot, but even if it didn’t, I would have gladly followed the story to the end, loving every second of it, just to watch Yara and Brent interact—to listen to their conversations that at times had me laughing my head off and at other times biting my nails. I loved theirs weren’t like so many other relationships in books where they fall in love in an instant and its all chemistry. *POILER* Oh, they had chemistry, but they were real, they questioned their emotions and made me believe it when they professed their love.*

I WANT MORE! Right now. I really loved the side characters and the story arc. It held mystery and I love it when I don’t see the ending coming. I also liked that this story completely wrapped up. It didn’t leave you on a huge cliffhanger waiting for the end to be tied up, but then again, just getting to know these characters makes it hard to wait to go through another adventure with them. If you’re looking for something fresh in the YA market, something that rekindles your love for YA, check out Intrinsical. I will be waiting anxiously for the second installment.

Review: Released by Megan Duncan

260 pages
Published April 1st 2011 by CreateSpace

From Goodreads: After a demon apocalypse kills their parents and everyone they know, 17-year old Abby Phillips, her brother, Carter, and friend, Max flee their home to travel through what has become the wastelands of America. When radio transmissions of a resistance offering shelter and safety cease, Abby is tempted to give up. Struggling to overcome life-threatening obstacles in their dangerous journey, Abby and her companions quickly discover there are much worse things lurking in the dark then they could have ever imagined.

Review: When I first began reading this story, I was a little hesitant. I beta read a LOT, and am always editing. I noticed the author put commas in odd places and every now and then an awkward sentence would slow me down. But, I soon didn’t notice the few errors as I got further into Abby’s story. I like Abby. I like this girl a lot. She’s no Buffy, but then no one is. She’s tough without the typical sarcasm that usually accompanies the cliché tough girl. Not only is she tough, but I agree with the logic of her thought process. She’s rational, as well as deep and caring.

I’d like to have known a little more about how or why the demons were unleashed onto the world in the first place, but I know there’s a second book coming, and the end revealed there’s more to be discovered later in the story. So I’m really looking forward to the next book. As far as a first book goes, I felt the plot was strong. There weren’t any plot holes. I read from the middle to the last page in an hour. I inhaled this story. I didn’t even realize I was doing it, that’s how caught up I was. There is a scene near the end where Abby and her brother Carter, her crush Max, and their newly acquired tag-a-long Taya, stumble upon City Hall in one of the cities they’re driving through. There’s some crazy stuff that happens here and the people are just losing their minds. I got lost in the story, truly believing this is exactly how people would react if all of a sudden the world were under attack by a demon apocalypse. Very well thought out plotting and great pacing.

Abby’s and Max’s relationship was a slow simmer at the beginning, but with all the action and near-death experiences, they quickly threw caution to the wind and clung to one another. I like how their relationship developed and am hoping for some deeper, steamier scenes in the next book. Taya did get on my nerves, but this is her character. I think the author did a wonderful job with her. I liked that she annoyed me lol and she also was necessary to push the plot forward, but not in a noticeable annoying way. Good stuff. My favorite part was how it ended. I don’t do spoilers, but I had such a satisfied feeling at the end. There was despair. There was hope. I felt it had a powerful, thought-provoking ending. I highly recommend this story for anyone who’s looking for a quick, action-packed read with a little romance. It’s a great addition to the YA market.

Review: Shadow Boy by Jen Wylie

Series: Tales of Ever
By: Jen Wylie | Other books by Jen Wylie
Published By: Echelon Press LLC.
Published: May 03, 2011
Word Count: 14,025

From Omnilit: If things keep going wrong, I think I might have a nervous breakdown. Oh wait, I did. I manage to gather my courage, or maybe stupidity, and venture into the Tall Forest. My only clue to finding my Dad lies on the other side, or so I've been told. Its emptiness is deceiving.

As I make my way within its darkness, I set off a trap. I might be fast, but not fast enough, and Ever has taken its toll on me. My search for Dad is put on hold when I get myself into some serious trouble. A boy and his shadow save me from certain death and come to my rescue. Or do they?

I remember all too well that most people are banished to Ever for a reason. Should I trust this Shadow Boy? After all, nothing in Ever is ever what it seems.

Review: Shadow Boy is the third installment in a series of shorts through Quakeme.com, a division of Echelon Press, intended to shake up young readers. In this new story, Misha has been left alone, Jadus abandoned her and she’s searching for a sacred tree in Ever while trying to survive its dangers. While feeling the stab of loneliness, Misha once again faces another obstacle of Ever, when suddenly someone is at her side. This new boy frightens Misha, though it seems he’s trying to help her. Misha refers to him as Shadow Boy—his shadow is an extension of him that moves separately and seems to be powerful. Shade tells Misha he needs her, her flame enables him to use his shadow in the darkness of Ever, but she’s wary of him. Although there are far more scary things in Ever to fear, Misha can’t help but be frightened of Shade. Something about him seems too dangerous. And oh, he’s coming off like a total bay boy. I liked Shade immediately. He’s secretive and I love his power. Very cool. Masha’s character is evolving. She’s becoming stronger as she faces the creatures of Ever, and although she still feels she needs help from Shade, she’s not dependent on him. She’s watching him closely. I can’t wait for the next story. I’m waiting for Shade to reveal his secrets and also for Misha to find Jadus. I think once all three of them get together sparks will fly. This series is highly action-packed and with every installment keeps getting better! Every new character introduced brings added tension. Wonderful read and wonderful program for young readers!

Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Hardcover, 487 pages

Buy from Amazon here

From Goodreads: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Review: Woot! Yay for Dystopians that kick ass! Sorry. Just finished the last page and couldn’t wait to write up my review. I’m a little still in butt-kicking mode. Okay, Tris. She’s an amazing character. I loved that she was so painfully flawed. It’s refreshing to see a girl admit she’s not perfect and not whine about it. She’s caring, but she’s not self-sacrificing, and she doesn’t shy away from admitting it. She can even be cruel at times, though she realizes this is not a great thing about her, she’s honest. I loved her growth through the story. She didn’t so much as change as she became aware of the fact her flaws and the things she felt made her lacking, were actually her strengths and she used them. I loved her from the start.

The dystopian society, though I felt the world building and the factions were awesome, I had one question on the back of my mind. What is outside of the city? The only part of this book I felt was flawed was that no one knew, and they didn’t seem to care. Or if they did know, they didn’t share it with others who were curious. I felt that this needed to be fleshed out a little more, or that possibly be explained in a way that showed us the society of factions weren’t permitted to know. Whatever, it’s not a huge thing. All the factions and government ideals made up for it, and I loved the world. I just hope the second book really delves deeper into this.
I don’t know why the marketing team hit on comparing it to the Hunger Games so hard. I believe this is a strong enough story to stand on its own. I honestly feel that it hurts it in the long run to keep comparing it. It’s NOT the Hunger Games. And that’s fine. I loved the Hunger Games. I also love Divergent. But in different
way. They are two different stories.

Overall, this was an absolute home run. Action. Romance. Intensity. Drama. Slight humor. It pretty much has it all. And above all, it’s a story about choices. We all make choices, every day of our lives. The choices Tris was faced with and how she overcame her fears, relied on herself, became brave, or stayed brave, and discovered that she could love selflessly, made this a powerful read. I want more! Now! Did I mention Four? The hot guy lead? No? Even more reason to read this book and stamp my feet waiting for the next book.

Review: Minder by Kate Kaynak

Paperback, 249 pages

From Goodreads: Sixteen-year-old Maddie Dunn is special, but she needs to figure out how to use her new abilities before somebody else gets hurt. Ganzfield is a secret training facility full of people like her, but it's not exactly a nurturing place.

Every social interaction carries the threat of mind-control.

A stray thought can burn a building to the ground.

And people's nightmares don't always stay in their own heads. But it's still better than New Jersey. Especially once she meets the man of her dreams...

Review: I know I’ve been absent from my blog for a little while. I apologize. Life happens and sometimes pulls us away from the things we love. That doesn’t mean I stopped reading, however. I still found time to inhale some books that I’ve had on my TBR list for a while. I’ve also reopened to review requests.

One book that has been on my TBR list that I finally got around to reading (and I’m so glad I did!) is Minder. If you read my blog enough, you know that I have series issues with abuse in stories. I just can’t read it myself--don’t watch it in movies, and find it very difficult to invest myself in a book that deals heavily on the subject. When we first meet Maddie, she is in the midst of being attacked. Oh God, my heart almost gave out on me. I almost put the book down. However, the scene was quickly over, and no sooner was she attacked than she was able to save herself. The means in which she defeated her attackers had me hooked on the story by the first chapter. I’m so happy I pushed through. What Maddie had endured, and the way she handled it, brought me very close with her character. And as she began a new life in the Ganzfield boarding school, I felt for her as she faced all new obstacles and hardships. She was more than a likable character. I always fail in my reviews to express just how much I love a character when they truly touch me, but just trust me; Maddie is a strong, fierce, and thoughtful girl with amazing insight. And that’s not just because of her ability which allows her to see into other’s minds, though that does help with her growth as she evaluates the rights and wrongs of doing so. But she herself grew throughout the story to become a much stronger person because of who she was and her principles.

What I really loved about this story was the relationship between Maddie and Trevor. Normally I’m all swoony over a great lead guy, but I’m hooked on Trevor in a deeper way. He is drop dead gorgeous for sure, but because we are able to see what he’s thinking through Maddie, we are given everything. His vulnerability, worries, desires, strengths, weaknesses…. Everything. He’s an amazing character. The love between Maddie and Trevor literally made me breathless. While I was reading, there were passages where Maddie had to remind herself to breathe, and I found that I’d been holding my breath also. It’s just that passionate.

The paranormal aspect of the story was phenomenal. I'm so picky about this. For me, if there's not a strong enough plot, the romance fails. Both have to balance each other to make the story work. I completely lost myself in this story--rooting for the characters as they discovered more about their abilities and also following along with the logic and  theories. I didn't pause once to question if something wasn't plausible, I simply nodded along, caught up in the world. Even had a discussion with my 13yo son later at the table about lucid dreams lol.

Okay, when I love a book this much I can go on and on. I tend to ramble. So I’m going to end my review here and simply say that Ms. Kaynak is an amazingly talented writer. I loved the voice of this story, and I fell in love with the characters. If you’re looking for something fresh in the YA Paranormal Romance department, do yourself a favor and check out Minder. If I still listed my review flames for ratings on my site, my blog would be on fire!

Review: Six Moon Summer by SM Reine

ebook, 198 pages
Published April 29th 2011
Buy from Amazon here

From Goodreads: Rylie's parents are going through a messy divorce. They send her to summer camp to get her out of the way of their fighting lawyers, but she's just as miserable at the girls' camp as she was at home-- there's nothing vegetarian for her to eat at the mess hall, she hates hiking and archery, and the other campers taunt Rylie mercilessly.

One night, the bullying goes too far, and Rylie runs away. She doesn't get far. It's a full moon, and she isn't alone in the forest. A wild animal mauls her. She's certain she won't survive.

Instead of dying, she wakes up unharmed in her cabin the next morning. The only sign that something has changed are the healed scars on her chest, her increasingly keen senses, and her sudden craving for raw, bloody meat. A boy from the other camp seems to know what's happening to her, but Rylie isn't sure if she can trust herself with Seth.

Rylie soon learns that she only has until the end of summer before she becomes just like the monster that attacked her: a man-eating werewolf hungry for human flesh. Unless she can find a cure, she's only six moons away from transforming forever and losing her life to the hunger...

Review: Wow. I’ve read many indie books, and I have to say I was extremely impressed with Reine’s exceptional writing. After countless hours of beta reading for writers, it’s been ingrained into me to look and seek out typos, mistakes, awkward structure, but I read straight through Six Moon Summer without pause. I was extremely impressed. Rylie for me started off a little weak. Although I understand that was needed to show her character growth, I felt her reasoning for secluding herself away from the other campers was feeble, and I wished she’d treated her one friend, Cassidy, a little better. There was another scene where I felt Rylie was a little too harsh on one of her friends for bringing his girlfriend to a concert. I think the author needs to put a little more thought into the way other girls might perceive her actions there, but really, those incidents were the only things I found to mar her character. Rylie took on her struggles fiercely. I loved how she embraced her wolf side, even though she feared it, she realized that its strength could help her rather than hold her back. And she used it, thrusting herself into the fray. I admire female characters like this. It’s nice for a change to see the girl take on all these changes and watch how she responds. I thought Riley embraced her beast gracefully. I thought the plot was strong. I’ve read many, many werewolf tales and I felt this one was solid. I loved the mythology and how it was woven into the camp. Very eerie and interesting premise. The only thing I could have used more of was more closure at the end. We heard the whole story from Riley’s POV. We followed her from the beginning. And although I enjoyed seeing things through Seth’s POV at the end, I wished I could have heard from Riley there, too. But I believe this is going to be a series, so I’m definitely looking forward to reading more and discovering what will happen next. If you love werewolf books and are looking for something with wonderful writing that you can lose yourself in, check out Six Moon Summer. Fast and action-packed, and setting up for an interesting series, it’s an awesome read!

Also, I love this cover! And check out the amazing book trailer!

GIVEAWAY BLOG TOUR! Amaretto Flame by Sammie Spencer

Kindle Edition
Published March 24th 2011

From Goodreads: Olivia has spent her life learning about her enemies, the deadly Venator - including how to kill them. What she knows nothing about is whiskey, playing poker, or rugged, copper-haired musicians. As punishment for a small 'crime,' Olivia is sent to a safe house in a human town and forced to live as one of them for a summer. There, she meets the charming Jackson Vance, and her real education begins. She soon discovers that she's being hunted, and figuring out why means she uncovers a secret that threatens to end everything she's ever fought for.

I'm so excited to have Everett from the Eagleton Coven here on YA Bound for a Miniview!

1) Everett, can you tell us what it's like being a part of your coven? How close are you with the other members?

The coven is everything to me; they're my family, my teammates, and my inspiration for being the best person I can be. I am closer to some members than I am others, but I care deeply for every one of them.

 2) You seem very weary of Jackson. Is there a reason for your distrust, or does he just rub you the wrong way?

For the longest time, it's just been the coven members. We know who we can trust, and we can count on each member of the coven. I just don't think we should trust so blindly in someone we don't even know. I know Olivia cares for him, but what if they were in public and a hunter attacked? What's he going to do...sing the hunter to death? He just can't protect her like I...like the other members of the coven could.

 3) I know that you and Olivia are like siblings, really close. But I can't help but wonder if you may have deeper feelings for her, possibly on a romantic level?

*Blushes.* No ... No! Olivia would never look at me like that. I mean, I'm her little brother as far as she's concerned. And I couldn't look at her like that, either. I guess that would be weird. Besides, Olivia has this Jackson now. Whatever. As long as she's happy...that's all that matters to me in the world.

AW! Wonderful answers, Everett! Thanks for stopping by YA Bound! Everyone else please continue reading on to find out how to WIN some amazing prizes!
