Review: Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready

From Goodreads: Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.

Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.
As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart.

Review: Now, I don’t know if you guys know this, but Shade is my favorite book. Of. All. Time. Yup. Reading Shade for me was like taking a trip back in time to my teen years. Aura was as close to a character to myself as I’ve ever found. The only difference, instead of just having a boyfriend in a punk band, I actually played rhythm guitar in my boyfriend’s punk band ;) The music, language, cool rules… It's all spot on and it all followed right over to Shift. The love triangle in this trilogy is the best love triangle ever. The love, romance, suspense, emotions… It all is so well balanced and so passionate, I hate that this series will end! UGH. Shift delves a little deeper into the plot. The reasoning in why the shift happened in the first place. We get a little closer to discovering what Aura’s role is in all this is. Now, the shocking thing for me is this. Once I take a Team, I never turn back. I stick by that guy all the way to the end. This is the first time, especially in a second novel, that I’ve switched Teams. I adored Logan in the first book, he’s an amazing character. Sometimes a little too close to my ex-boyfriend lol. But, Zachary was my man. And he was who I truly believed Aura should be with. However, Zachary pulled some pretty dirty things out in this book, things that I’m not as forgiving as Aura over. And although I’m looking forward to the next book to see where things lead, I have to admit I’m praying for a miracle! I’m crossing my fingers and hopping backward in my room, chanting that Logan finds a way back. I could gush and gush and go on forever about the things I love in this book. The steamy is ratcheted up to a whole new level for one, but I’m just going to say, that if you have not read these books, what the heck are you waiting for? They have everything! This is by far the best YA series that truly touches on what it’s like to be a real teen. Ready is brilliant! Her characters are real. Her plot is simply amazing and full of powerful twists, and the love triangle is one to die for!

  1. I really enjoyed Shade as well. I thought it was extremely well-written and nuanced. I'm a YA writer but I still come across a lot of YA books that I can't get through - mainly because I really have trouble with the snarky main character voice in a lot of them. But Aura's voice was authentic. She had sass, but she was also vulnerable. Plus she didn't make stupid decisions all the time just so the writer could advance the plot (another thing that annoys me in YA writing). She was just a really well-drawn character, as was Logan. All of them actually. So yeah, great book! Can't wait to read Shift!
